The Leading Through Connection Network Diagnostic is a reflective tool that guides participants through the process of visually mapping their professional relationships — examining each through the lens of development, purpose, sponsorship, and support. Recently, Buellers had the opportunity to work through this tool together, facilitated by Katie Danna-Poston, Cohort 10. Below, a few participants share what the experience surfaced for them.
Vail Shoultz-McCole, Cohort 3
After completing my Network Leader Diagnostic, I’ve been reflecting on what it truly means to “map” a professional network with intention.
It was encouraging to see that my network is mostly diverse and rich in development, purpose, and sponsorship resources. Taking the time to visually map these relationships helped me see patterns I hadn’t noticed before—particularly how interconnected my core group is and how that contributes to my network being somewhat closed.
What I’m taking away is the importance of being more strategic and future-focused regarding networks. My network gives me strong support and depth, but I need to create intentional space for new relationships outside my immediate circle to create a more open network.
This process reminded me that networking isn’t about collecting contacts—it’s about cultivating the right mix of depth, diversity, openness, and purpose. I’m excited to continue shaping my network in ways that support both current impact and future growth.
Vani Tangella, Cohort 12
I was unaware that a tool like this existed, and I was pleasantly surprised by how helpful it was! Taking the time to slow down and identify the people in my network helped me gain a better understanding of its strengths and the opportunities for growth. The mapping process also allowed me to see what different individuals in my network can offer, such as sponsorship, encouragement, new perspectives, or connections to new opportunities. This experience allowed me to think about my relationships in a more comprehensive way.
I’m walking away with a reminder to be more intentional about who I stay connected to and who I want to build relationships with this year. I could reach out more consistently and also expand my circle. My next steps are to reconnect with a couple of people and be more proactive about building new relationships.
Becky, Cohort 4
I was delighted by the practice of listing people in my network because it gave me space to reflect on just how broad and deep my network truly is. It reminded me how much I’ve relied on relationships over time—and how consistently I’ve been supported and rewarded through intentional networking, both professionally and personally.
Hanna Nichols, Cohort 8
Mapping the people in my network turned out to be such a rich experience for me. It was such a gift to have the time to devote to learning how my network supports my leadership and reflect on how I want to spend my time nourishing my network this year. I walked away knowing the areas where I need to focus, and feeling affirmed in the energy I’ve spent building stronger, deeper connections.
