The Early Childhood Mentor/Coach helps Head Start (HS) teachers, assistant teachers, co-teachers and Early Head Start (EHS) home visitors develop new skills and continuously improve their early childhood teaching practices. The Early Childhood Mentor/Coach engages staff who works with children birth-five in a collaborative process that involves observation, reflective communication, training, role-modeling, and goal setting.
 Major Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Major tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities):

  • Recognize and build on the existing knowledge and skills of classroom staff and home visitors through observation, reflective conferencing, goal setting and planning
  • Collaborate with classroom coordinators for the purpose of creating a cohesive approach to the work with the classroom team.
  • Collaborate with the EHS supervisor for the purpose of creating a cohesive approach to the work the home visiting team.
  • Conduct Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) assessments to determine which CLASS dimensions coaching will address for each teaching team. (This position requires yearly testing and successful completion of CLASS Reliability Certification.)
  • Review CLASS assessment scores with classroom staff and classroom coordinators to help identify areas of strength and develop goals for improvement
  • Provide one to one and small group mentoring to assistant teachers, co-teachers, and teachers to help strengthen child development practices and assure quality programs
  • Pyramid Plus Coach certification for the Head Start program. (This position requires successful completion of the Pyramid Plus Coach training and annual renewal)
  • Support all Head Start classrooms with Pyramid Plus strategies and supports to be compliant with the Pyramid Plus curriculum
  • Complete the Teaching Pyramid Observation Tool assessment for each Head Start classroom a minimum of once annually. (This position requires completion of training and renewals to perform this assessment in the classroom setting)
  • Work with the Early Childhood Education Supervisor to provide mentoring and professional development for classroom teaching teams and home visitors.
  • Conduct observations of teaching staff  and home visitors interactions with children and families to create opportunities for discussion
  • Inform center supervisor or support staff of center issues, which may affect program or agency compliance or image
  • Maintain a positive and nurturing physical and emotional environment in the center and home based program
  • Conduct observations, recording, and evaluation of individual children for the purpose of planning activities
  • Develop and implement an individualized plan that identifies strengths, needs, and goals for each Head Start teacher, co-teacher, teaching assistants and home visitors
  • Follow health component procedures for health and safety and support a safe learning environment for staff and children
  • Participates in mentor-coach training and support opportunities to enhance job skills
  • Follow procedure for reporting suspected child abuse
  • Must be able to interact with others in a positive manner
  • Requires regular and prompt attendance

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):

  • Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education; OR
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field with current CDA credential; OR
  • Bachelor's Degree with endorsement to teach at the early childhood level; OR
  • Baccalaureate or advanced degree and coursework equivalent to a major relating to early childhood education, with experience teaching preschool-age children


  • Two years' experience in a licensed day care/preschool with children birth to five


  • Valid driver's license and good driving record
  • CPR/First Aid certificate
  • Director qualified per State of Colorado licensing requirements, or ability to obtain Director Qualification
  • within 6 months
  • CLASS Certification and annual renewal (required within 6 months of hire)
  • Pyramid Plus Coaching Certification and annual renewal (required within 1 year of hire)
  • Attainment of a Coaching Level Credential with the State of Colorado (by achieving a Level 1-3 Coaching Certificate or by attaining the UCD coaching certificate)

    Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Knowledge of Colorado Department of Human Services rules and regulations for preschool programs
    • Bi-lingual language skills in English and Spanish is a preferred qualification
    • Organizational and time management skills to handle the workload and frequent interruptions
    • Must be able to work independently and as a team member
    • Must be 21 years of age and be director qualified (as defined by Minimum Rules and Regulations for preschool aged child care center.)
    • Current physical exam and tuberculosis test results required, per Colorado Licensing Rules and Regulations and Head Start Program Performance Standards
    • Acceptance of diversity and ability to work comfortably with the public
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality
    • Good judgment and decision-making abilities
    • Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills
